New Oracle Java licencing rules – what do I need to know?
Published on November 15th 2019 by Paul Waite
In 2018 Oracle announced changes to the way that Java Standard Edition (SE) was going to be licenced, with these changes coming into effect in January 2019. The changes left many people with questions about whether they were affected, what licencing they needed for their environment and how to purchase these licences.
What are the changes?
The changes effect commercial users of Java SE8 ending the free updates, moving Java SE to a subscription model. Any organization looking to keep up with support will be impacted by these changes. An organisation will need a Java licence if they are wanting to use the commercial features of Java SE, use Java SE v11+, want Oracle support or are running Java SE for longer than 6 months.
Benefits of support
Ensuring your Java subscription is up to date and licenced correctly allows the organisation to take advantage of the following benefits:
Early access to bug fixes
Support for cloud, server and desktop deployments
24/7 Oracle Support
