Understanding HPE Drive Part numbers:

What do they mean and how can you make sure you order an exact replacement?

So, you have a faulty HPE drive. You enter the server’s management system and write down the part number shown to order a replacement, but when it arrives the drive doesn’t fit. Happened to you before?

This happens because HPE use the same bare disk across multiple servers, but add different caddies and firmware depending on the model. A drive used in a DL360 G7 won’t work in a DL360p G8, but the base disk part number might be the same.

When it comes to finding the correct replacement, the server management tools don’t give sufficient information to get the right part every time.

When you log into your server remotely or on-site and access the management portal you will be shown the HPE Model number, which relates to the disk itself, without the specific firmware or caddy. This part number is also used in other drive combinations, but Ware247 can find the correct part number using this information and some basic details about your server.

Where is the -B21 option part number?

You might also be wondering, “when I ordered these drives, I used a -B21 part number, so where is that?” The -B21 part number is the marketing part number that HPE use for their options, but this will never be shown on the actual disk. This will usually be on the box if you buy retail/HPE Renew:
